Examining Life Again

Remember Socrates' advice that the unexamined life is not worth living? He's right of course and I am examining life again.

After flunking hemoglobin counts while trying to donate platelets, I did a fecal occult test and found I had blood in my stool. I asked my gastroenterologist to add a colonoscopy to a esphogus exam and he agreed to do so. At the April 25 colonoscopy, he discovered a malignant polyp and we're waiting for pathology to confirm same. I've had the pelvic CT scan and chest X-ray and when those results come back, we'll know whether the cancer has spread. If it has it's curtains with a likely one year survival. That's unless the surgeons can chop out the new cancer centers. I'm "hoping" for a different outcome: colon resection. It's a major operation with considerable discomfort and a long, hard recovery -- probably 4 to 6 weeks. The Ireland trip we planned is probably down the tubes. Luckily we have travel insurance. It will be touch and go to make the General Assembly on June 29. Then we have the family reunion on July 25 in Myrtle Beach. Something to shoot for. I like to think I'm positive and tough so I'll be drawing on those parts of my personality while watching my weight drop dramatically. I needed to lose 30 lbs. but this is probably not the way to do it. More later.
